Our Mission

Work with youth to build a community where they can find identity and purpose through the bicycle.

Our Vision

Create equitable opportunity for youth to develop and socially connect through cycling as a lifelong activity.

Our Values

Community: Collaborate to build strong and vibrant communities.

Partnership: Create meaningful partnerships to foster positive change.

Inclusiveness: Build welcoming and inclusive environments.

Equity: Promote equity and equality in all aspects of our work.

Integrity: Help youth reach their potential through high-quality coaching and development.

How It Started

The year was 2017. The place was South Minneapolis. With a mountain bike, gym space, and vision of equitable opportunity for all, Bruce Martens founded NCYD—and sparked a community.

Fueled by Bruce’s passion for youth development through cycling, we’ve grown to serve nearly 200 registered members each year. We’ve advised and partnered with youth development programs—collectively serving more than 10,000 kids—throughout the country. We’ve established a youth board of directors and expanded our non-male ridership year over year.

But we haven’t done it alone. We’re grateful for the long-standing support of our community partners and donors. Thanks to their contributions, we’ve been able to broaden our scholarship program as well as our vision for the future.

With deeply engaged youth and adult leaders, a dedicated team of coaches, and the continued support of our community, the trail ahead is bright indeed.

Raised over $8,000 to support programs specifically focused on increasing female, or those who identify as female, riders.

NCYD adopted using the term “Femme” to create a welcoming space centered on female identity and community. Open to anyone who identifies as female, non-binary folks, allies, and anyone who wants to be part of a female-focused environment.

NCYD hosts its first-ever Femme bikepacking trip in partnership with Unruly Women.
